Bring on the shellfish boil …crab, prawns, butter and garlic.

With a cool spring and heavy snow pack, came later bud break and higher levels of soil moisture giving lots of natural vigour in the grapevines. More precipitation in early June resulted in a full canopy by the end and kept our vineyard team running. July dried things up with extremely hot temps reaching over 35C. August was not as typical, with max temps sitting around 30C, a little lower then that in July, prob due to the three weeks of wildfire smoke blocking the sunlight. This gave the crew time to catch up on the canopy maintenance. September was a little cooler than usual, but October caught us up on ripening the fruit with its warmer, cloudless days finishing off the ripening period right on schedule, around the third week of October.
A really neat illustration of the transition of some of our production into a super small lot reserve program. The Spring of 2020 will see the release of the first of our MAGIC Series, a limited production/4 barrel reserve. Over time we have realized that there is a confluence of optimum situations, from the plant, to exposure, to the nuances of yeast activity and barrel response that ultimately produce something magical. Beginning with the 2018 harvest we produced 4 barrels from one section of the Sideshow Hill VY that produced a consistently luscious pineapple dominant fruit. Taking this production from the blend, we placed it in new french oak from the Boutes Cooperage and left it there for 12 months. No ML in this vintage ... acid balanced out the barrel tannin perfectly.
